Sun-kissed glow without baking in the sun is possible – with the newest technologies, achieving a natural-looking tan is easier than ever. Plus – now you can get it in a natural way.
SUN-LESS TAN: 2 OPTIONS, 1 OF THEM - SAFE
There are only two ways to achieve a sunless, sun-kissed glow without an actual baking in the sun – tanning beds and self tans. Tanning beds use ultraviolet sprays to promote the development of melanin in the skin and turn it to sun-kissed hue. The amount of UV radiation is in a slightly higher concentration than you can get from a natural sunshine. Sun beds, especially high intensity ones, are often linked to skin damage that includes cases of skin cancer, therefore the risks are quite similar with bronzing in a natural sun.
The other sunless option is faking it the safe way. Self tanners can give the skin a bronzed look without exposing it to harmful UV rays. So what miracle ingredients can guarantee a beautifully golden skin tone? They are called dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and erythrulose, and they are produced by the fermentation of glycerine and yeast extract.
Dihydroxyacetone or DHA is the main ingredient responsible for the tan effect. It is the most popular tanning agent used and as industry’s professionals state, no other substance, so far, has been capable of providing more satisfactory or more long-lasting results. The natural fake tan products use a DHA derived from natural ingredients, such as sugar beet (it can be derived synthetically as well). DHA works by reacting to amino acids in the top layer of the skin (dead cells of the stratum corneum) and that creates a browning effect.
When DHA self tan is applied, it usually takes approximately 6-10 hours for the tan to fully develop. The tan lasts between 5-7 days and the effect can be maintained by using moisturisers.
Eliminating the risks
Dihydroxyacetone is known as a skin-drying agent and it can heighten the skin’s sensibility to sun.
Highly aware of this risk, it is crucial to boost the self tan products with high levels of antioxidants that fight free radical damage and eliminate skin drying. Well-formulated and safe fake tans should be packed with antioxidants to counteract the free radical reactions in the skin, as well as powerful hydrating and age-defying ingredients such as hyaluronic acid.
There is no evidence that DHA can penetrate through the skin into the bloodstream. It is super important to remember that self tan products can’t offer any protection from UV exposure (even if the product claims to do so, as the effect will not last long after application) so using an SPF is an absolute must all year round.
How do I apply it?
1
Exfoliate This will help to remove the excess dead skin cells. Use a natural alternative, like coffee grounds.
2
Apply in sections Massage the product into your skin in a circular motion. Apply it to sections like the arms, legs etc., wash your hands afterwards, then lightly extend the tan to your hands and feet.
3
Dry it well Give it about 10 minutes to dry before getting dressed.
